WHAT YOU CAN DO
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed at the divisions in our society, the threats to our communities, and the unraveling of American democracy. We wonder, what can one person do? But if all of us do something, even one small thing, it can make a difference. The success of American democracy depends on the strength of civil society: neighbors, parents, churches, community groups, and more coming together to work for the common good.
Here are some things you can do to work for the common good of your nation. Pick even just one and help change our society for the better.
- BE INFORMED. America has changed in the past 20 years in ways that might be hard to recognize. Whatever your perspective, it’s good to know about groups whose influence is growing. The Trump administration is currently trying to remake American government and society, influenced by Project 2025 and the groups and movements below. Be informed and decide for yourself if their beliefs represent yours. and whether their agenda is going to help you or hurt you and the people you care about.

- GET AWAY FROM ALGORITHMS AND ECHO CHAMBERS: Avoid social media with algorithms that promote polarizing content. Only post and share content you have fact checked first. Social media platforms are full of bots posting divisive comments and algorithms that try to influence you in one political direction. Don’t just click on the video or post that comes up next in your feed. Stick with sources you trust to be accurate whether or not they share your exact opinions. Imagine who might be setting up the bots and algorithms to influence you. Do they have your best interests at heart? It seems probably not, although we might not ever fully know who they are or what their plans are. Take control of your own content and don’t let yourself be manipulated.
- TALK TO OTHER HUMANS: Some of us remember a time not too long ago when people with very different opinions could talk to each other, respectfully disagree, and learn something from the other person. When conservatives, liberals, and those in between worked on bipartisan legislation to solve common problems, went to church together, etc. … Now, the polarization of American society is getting worse and worse as 24-hour cable news cycles, social media echo chambers, etc. provide each person the content that reinforces their own beliefs. We get our news from the sources we like best, watch our own TV shows and movies in our homes, and chat with like-minded people online. To function as a country, we have to talk to each other. Get out of your comfort zone and talk to people who aren’t like you. Learn the reasons behind their beliefs even if you disagree. See if you have anything in common with them.
- DON’T VOTE FOR MAGA: The current version of the Republican Party is off the rails. But you don’t have to be a Democrat or a progressive to stand up to tyranny and corruption. Whatever you do, don’t vote for or support MAGA candidates. Vote for Republican candidates who are still willing stand up to Donald Trump and protect our democracy. Vote for a third party candidate- or start your own third party.
